Sugar Champagne Bar, tucked into the corner of Pineapple and Lemon Avenues in downtown Sarasota, is one of the boldest backdrops in the area, and it made for an engagement session unlike almost anything else in my portfolio.
What Makes Sugar Champagne Bar Unique
Sugar occupies a nearly century-old building that underwent a large renovation, and the result is closer to a Parisian supper club than a typical Florida bar. The exterior is a deep, unmistakable pink. Inside, the two-story lounge is done in velvet upholstery, crystal chandeliers, gold accents, and pops of teal and coral throughout. A design the owners describe as “Old Regency Florida,” and it reads exactly that way: glamorous, a little theatrical, and completely unapologetic about it. There’s even a pink piano, with live performances some evenings. Every surface in the space was clearly chosen with intention, which is part of what makes it such a striking place to shoot.
Why It’s a Fit for Maximalist Couples
Not every couple wants understated for their engagement photos, and Sugar is exactly the answer for the ones who don’t. If your taste runs toward rich color, texture, and drama rather than neutral tones and negative space, this venue does a lot of the work for you. The velvet, the gold light fixtures, the jewel-toned walls, it’s a space built for elevated maximalism, not clutter, which is an important distinction. Everything in the room is curated, so the boldness reads as intentional rather than busy. For a couple who already gravitates toward that kind of richness in how they dress, decorate, and entertain, it’s a genuinely rare backdrop to have access to in Sarasota.
What to Know Before You Book
Sugar requires a photoshoot reservation to have photos done there. There is a reservation fee and you get the entire place to yourself. They play vibey music, we can control the ambient lighting, and pop a bottle of champagne.
How This Location Photographs
The color in this space does most of the heavy lifting. Warm gold light bounces off the chandeliers and brass fixtures, the pink walls read as a soft, saturated backdrop rather than overpowering any one shot, and the velvet textures add depth. It’s a location that rewards close, detail-focused frames as much as wider ones. The piano, the bar itself, the small architectural details throughout are all worth working into the session.
