Destination Wedding at Crook Point in Gold Beach, Oregon

Weddings

This wedding was different from most destination weddings I photograph, and not just because of the venue. I met this couple over two years before their wedding day. I was the one who photographed the proposal. They’d originally planned a private elopement, just the two of them. After a little time passed in their engagement, they’d changed course entirely and wanted to throw a full celebration at Crook Point, on the southern Oregon coast. More on that in a minute! First, the venue itself deserves a spotlight.

About Crook Point

Crook Point sits on a 3,000-acre family-owned estate between Gold Beach and Brookings, right on the Oregon coastline. It’s the kind of scenery that’s hard to overstate in writing. There are dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and ocean views in nearly every direction. The property includes several distinct outdoor spaces to choose from, including the Arch Rock Main Lawn and Byrdie’s Beach Lawn, so a ceremony and reception can each have their own setting without ever leaving the estate. Crook Point also has eight vacation homes available for lodging, which means a couple and their guests can genuinely settle into the property for a full weekend rather than just showing up for a single afternoon.

Something to Plan Around: No Indoor Option

The one real downside of Crook Point is that every venue space on the property is outdoors. For a coastline known for its wind and unpredictable weather, that’s worth taking seriously during planning rather than something to figure out the week of. It doesn’t mean the venue isn’t worth it; the scenery here is unlike almost anywhere else I’ve photographed. But I’d encourage any couple considering Crook Point to talk through a real weather contingency, whether that’s tenting, a flexible ceremony time, or simply going in with the right expectations for coastal Oregon.

A Proposal, Two Years Later

Getting to photograph both ends of a couple’s story like this doesn’t happen often, and it’s part of why I love this work as much as I do. I remember this couple as they were at the very beginning. Somewhere between that day and this one, they decided their story was worth celebrating out loud, surrounded by the people who mattered to them.

That shift, from wanting something quiet to wanting something shared, is something I understand completely. A wedding isn’t really about the size of the guest list or the scale of the event. It’s about deciding a relationship is worth marking in front of the people who’ve watched it unfold. Getting to be there for both of those decisions, two years apart, is the kind of full-circle moment that reminds me why I keep doing this. Most of my job is showing up for one day. Every so often, I get to show up for the whole story.
