Some destination weddings are a single beach ceremony and a quiet dinner after. Others turn into a full weekend, with golf outings, a kids’ pool day, and a rehearsal dinner before the wedding even starts. This one, at Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort just outside Cancun, was closer to the second, and it’s a good resort to talk through if you’re weighing a bigger, more full-scope destination wedding.

Dreams Playa Mujeres sits in a gated community about 45 minutes from Cancun International Airport, on its own private stretch of beach, with a golf course on site as well. It’s a large property, and that shows in the number of ceremony and reception spaces available. There are eight in total, depending on your guest count and the setting you want:
- The Beach, for larger groups, holding up to 300 for a ceremony or reception
- The Central Garden, an open-air space with sea views, accommodating up to 350
- The Gazebo, a mid-size option for up to 150 guests
- Over the Water, a platform set above one of the resort’s pools, ideal for a more intimate group of up to 80
- The Ballroom, air-conditioned and used both for larger receptions and as a rain backup, holding up to 250
- The Azure Veranda, a smaller, air-conditioned space for up to 100, also used as a secondary backup location
One detail worth knowing: Dreams Playa Mujeres only hosts one to two weddings per day. That’s not always the case at large resorts, and it means the on-site coordination team isn’t splitting its attention across multiple events happening at once on your wedding day.
How I Prepare for International Travel as Your Photographer
Destination weddings ask more of a photographer’s planning than a local one, and I take that seriously well before the wedding day arrives.
I typically fly in at least two days ahead of the wedding, and more if there’s a significant time change involved. That buffer isn’t just about avoiding travel delays, it gives my body time to adjust before a full day of work, so I’m not running on a disrupted internal clock when it matters most.
For resort weddings in Mexico specifically, I make it a point to stay at the same resort as the couple whenever possible. That removes transportation from the list of things that could go wrong on the wedding day itself. I’m already there, not relying on a shuttle or driver to get me to the ceremony on time.
I’m also familiar with what’s required to travel internationally with professional camera gear, customs expectations, documentation, and any visa requirements for the country I’m working in. That part of the trip is handled well before I land, not figured out at the airport.
Bringing in Outside Vendors at an All-Inclusive Resort
Dreams Playa Mujeres allows couples to bring in outside vendors, including photographers, alongside their resort wedding package. There’s typically a vendor fee, in the $500–600 range, that covers the resort’s coordination and ensures outside vendors meet their on-site standards. It’s worth confirming this fee and who’s responsible for it early in your planning, so it’s accounted for in your overall budget rather than a surprise later.
I also make sure to connect with the resort’s on-site wedding coordinator ahead of the wedding day, so there’s a clear line of communication between us. Timeline changes, venue walk-throughs, and any last-minute adjustments go much more smoothly when that relationship exists before the day starts.
Destination Weddings for Families
Dreams Playa Mujeres leans family-friendly, with a water park, kids’ activities, and connecting family suites available. If your guest list includes extended family or younger kids, that’s worth factoring into how you think about the weekend beyond the ceremony itself. A resort like this one gives non-wedding-party guests something to do during the parts of the day that don’t involve them directly, which tends to make the whole trip feel less like an obligation and more like a vacation everyone’s genuinely glad to be on.
